The Career Alignment Profile™ and Color Cruncher™
Career Management International has developed unique, online assessment tools to address a variety of employee and organizational human resources requirements. Based on proven and validated CMI instruments, the Career Alignment Profile (CAP) and the Color Cruncher help the individual and the organization provide solutions to career alignment and productivity issues. CAP and Color Cruncher are both CMI proprietary products which have been supporting workforce solutions for more than twelve years. When CAP and the Color Cruncher are used in conjunction, this integrated system provides a portfolio of career management resources to enable professional and personal development and career transition. Upon completion of the CAP and Color Cruncher, the user receives a personal report that identifies their top three marketable strengths for career planning.
The Career Alignment Profile and Color Cruncher have been used successfully for over a decade by individuals in both the public and private sectors.
Based on time-tested assessment methodology, the CAP is an accessible tool for businesses, organizations and educational institutions. The online tool efficiently analyzes skills and relates them directly to internal and external employment opportunities and/or to specific training to reduce skills gaps; creating a cohesive fit between the individual, their strengths and competencies and the organization's needs. Used effectively, the CAP helps employees maximize their strengths, assuring present and future career alignment, integration and greater potential for success in the workplace.

The Career Alignment Profile is a simple, accurate self-assessment tool.
CAP helps individuals to determine their strengths through the identification of their unique interests, abilities and work style preferences. CAP generates a personal report to enable an individual to match their unique strengths to job requirements, appropriate training, career fields, or other specific career opportunities. On average, individuals can complete this profile in twenty minutes.
As part of the service, individuals may register in the system, using employee identification numbers, for one-time or repeated access. Used effectively, the CAP allows employees to focus on areas in which they may maximize their skills and maximize their strengths, thus providing optimal return on investment for the organization.
Effectively applied, the career alignment process increases job performance and satisfaction.
Color Cruncher helps individuals evaluate optimal career choices by analyzing key words in job descriptions, job listings, training programs, and recreational and volunteer postings.
By using Color Cruncher in conjunction with the personalized CAP assessment report, individuals are able to compare their strengths to specific opportunities. If the majority of an individual's colors align with the results of the Color Cruncher, the opportunity is a potentially good match that the individual may choose to pursue. If not, more opportunities can be easily and quickly explored.
The Career Alignment Profile is flexible enough to work with an organization's Human Resource Information System (HRIS).
The system is also able to take job description information and generate career matches which may either go directly to the individual or to the human resources area for review. The CAP therefore becomes an excellent adjunct to the career and succession planning process.
Of equal importance is the use of the CAP during times of redeployment. As companies go through periods of mergers and acquisitions or are making decisions whether or not to invest or divest from certain product areas or are simply reallocating their work force, it is important to understand the innate skills of the existing work force as well as the requirements for the future. The CAP enables organizations to perform skills gap analyses of their current and future work force requirements. In this environment the CAP serves to assist the organization in determining where excess skills exist and where new skills need to be acquired.
CAP also has potential application to be added to an organization's Human Resource Information System (HRIS) as a unique employee development tool that can supplement the traditional HRIS applications which are typically transactional vice developmental in nature. There is a critical business imperative for HR developmental resources in the HRIS arena as more and more organizations in the private and public sectors struggle with addressing recruitment and retention issues.
An additional application of the CAP is its use as a tool to review existing job descriptions. Review and comparison of verbiage in existing job descriptions by CAP ensures that the language being used matches the characteristics of the task. When used as a job/task description analyzer, the CAP enables organizations to rapidly determine if the language in the description is commensurate with the job title, or if the current language needs to be updated and modified. The CAP quickly enables companies to make sure their job/task descriptions say what they mean so that hiring, career development, retention and career transition are based on valid and meaningful requirements.
The following examples illustrate just a few of the potential applications for the Career Alignment Profile and the Color Cruncher.
Self Assessment Tool - The CAP helps individuals quickly identify their strengths in relation to the workplace requirements through the identification of their interests, abilities, and work style preferences.
Self Assessment Tool - The CAP helps individuals quickly identify their strengths in relationship to the workplace requirements through the identification of their interests, abilities, and work style preferences.
Guided Assessment in the Outplacement process - Individuals being outplaced need definitive information about what they have to offer the marketplace before they begin their job search. CMI counselors provide clients with insights into career areas which are most closely supported by individual strengths, workstyle preference and skills. The CAP allows clients to determine the career areas that are a good fit for them in understandable terms, thus providing a firm foundation for the resume process and the marketing strategy.
Career Alignment Process - Participants match their strengths to job requirements, specific opportunities, alternative career fields or additional training by analyzing key words in job descriptions, job postings and curricula.
Curricula and Job Description Review - Business organizations and educational institutions can utilize the CAP to review existing job descriptions and course descriptions for accuracy and to identify core strengths and competencies required for success.
Outreach Tool - The CAP is intended as a self-development tool and is not intended for use as a primary selection tool. It is used for development and specialized applications with the appropriate permission of the participant.
Links to Training and Higher Education - Companies and educational institutions can use the strength identification components of the CAP to help individuals align to internal and external training opportunities.
The CAP is a systematic, solution focused assessment tool that is well suited for use in industry, academia, and the public/federal sectors. It enables organizations to enhance workforce development, deliver customized career management capabilities, foster continuous learning, improve productivity, and support retention and attrition management.

Tools & Materials for Managers
CMI also provides self-service functionality to partner organizations and their managers to ensure that the tools and materials necessary to facilitate their role in the career transition process are available at any time. Partner organizations can access and download CMI’s self-paced training tools on demand.
The tools, materials and information available online are:
- Notifier Training
- CMI’s self-paced training tools and products
- Severance Package Inserts (CMI Brochure)
- RSS Feeds to Pertinent Career and Outplacement Information
While outplacement is stressful for everyone involved, the notifying manager is quite often unprepared, or uneasy about the specific actions that need to be taken. Over the past three decades, CMI has provided Notifier Training to countless notifying managers to prepare them for separation meetings. Because separation meetings are often stressful for all participants, and delicate by the very nature of the meeting’s purpose, appropriate training is an important component in the outplacement process.
Separating employees currently receive a brochure in their separation package that describes the outplacement services provided by CMI on the partnering organization’s behalf. This brochure is available in hard copy and for download.
CMI provides a collection of applicable RSS feeds, which can viewed from CMI’s manager pages, for the benefit of partner organizations and notifying managers. These feeds are updated on a regular basis, and the content selection can be easily customized to meet the specific needs and requirements of CMI's partner organizations.
